President Hassan Rouhani has issued a warning to Donald Trump after the US president’s decision to designate Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) as a terrorist group. Not only has Iran’s president warned the US of its weaponry but also labelled the US as the “leader of global terrorism” yesterday. Tensions between the two countries have continued to rise after Trump withdrew the US from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran.
In a fiery speech, Rouhani said: “You know that we have developed missiles since last year that are beyond your imagination.
“You use terrorist groups against the peoples of the region and yet claim to have been fighting terrorism?
“You are at the top of terrorism in the entire world.”
Iran has constantly warned the US of its capability, claiming that the state has missiles capable of striking from 1,200 missiles away.
On the same day as Rouhani’s speech, Iranian lawmakers met for a parliamentary session where they chanted “Death to America!”
The bold response from Iran comes in the wake of Trump’s speech on Monday where he labelled the group as a “sponsor of terrorism”.
Trump’s statement on Monday said: “This unprecedented step, led by the Department of State, recognises the reality that Iran is not only a state sponsor of terrorism, but that the IRGC actively participates in, finances, and promotes terrorism as a tool of statecraft.”
Labelling the organisation as a terrorist group will now allow the US to impose further sanctions on the group’s involvement in Iran’s economy.
Trump added that the move was meant to “significantly expand the scope and scale” of pressure on Iran.
Trump also said: “If you are doing business with the IRGC, you will be bankrolling terrorism.”
Speaking support of Trump’s latest remarks, Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu praised the president.
He said: “Thank you for answering another one of my important requests, which serves the interests of our country and the countries of the region.”
