An eight-year-old boy was shot in the arm outside a teenager’s birthday party in Bilston, near Wolverhampton, late on Friday night.
His stepfather, 30, was shot in the chest during the incident outside the Bilston & District Labour Club on Wellington Road at about 11pm.
The pair were raced to a nearby hospital for treatment, but both have since been discharged.
Detective Sergeant Chris Jones, of West Midlands Police, said on Saturday: “We’re still trying to establish the motive for the shooting.
“But at this time we don’t believe that either the man or his stepson were the intended targets.”
Thankfully, they have escaped really serious injury, but the person or people responsible for this are clearly dangerous and willing to recklessly use violence.”
On Thursday night, a 15-year-old girl was shot in a separate attack 20 miles away in Sheldon, near Birmingham.
She and a 36-year-old woman were targeted on Frodesley Road, a residential street, at about 9.40pm, police said.
In a statement, a spokesman for West Midlands Police said both victims were taken to hospital with minor injuries.
He added: “Enquiries are ongoing to understand the circumstances of the incident.
“However, at this stage the incident is believed to have been targeted.”
Officers have urged anyone with information about either shooting to contact the force.
