Arsenal business questioned

Arsenal should have signed Chris Smalling or Gary Cahill rather than David Luiz over the summer.

That’s the verdict of Gunners hero Charlie Nicholas, who believes the centre-backs are better than any his old club currently have on their books.

“Why not – and I don’t know how much he would have cost – go and get Smalling from Manchester United in the summer before he went to Roma? Because he’d be better than what they had,” Nicholas said.

“They could’ve had Cahill from Chelsea and sat him in the defence. He is better than what they have and is also a leader, but they missed out.”

Celtic example to Rangers

Rangers are said to be looking to take a leaf out of Celtic’s book by copying the buy them cheap, sell them high transfer model.

Tottenham transfer concern

Former Tottenham striker Darren Bent fears Spurs could lose Paulo Gazzaniga if Mauricio Pochettino throws Hugo Lloris into the team when he returns from injury.

“I get Lloris is his first choice, he’s been a great goalkeeper for many years now but at some stage you start to get over the hill,” Bent told Football Insider.

“If he’s at that point, I’m not sure, but his form, the mistakes he’s been making, would suggest potentially yes.

“I’m sure that’s a worry for Pochettino because yes, he likes Lloris, but you don’t want another team to come and get Gazzaniga because there are several teams in the league at the minute that would love a goalkeeper like him.”

Real Madrid’s Chelsea plan

Real Madrid want to prise Kylian Mbappe away from Paris Saint-Germain just like they nabbed Eden Hazard from Chelsea.

Spanish outlet ElDesmarque claim Florentino Perez is eager to convince Mbappe not to sign a new deal at the Parc des Princes.

That would allow the Real president to capitalise on the forward having just 12 months left to run on his contract next summer.

Real successfully carried out such a below-market-value raid on Chelsea back in June after Hazard entered the final year of his Blues agreement.

Man Utd problem

Manchester United hero Paul Scholes doesn’t think Victor Lindelof is up to scratch to play alongside Harry Maguire in the heart of defence.

Scholes aired his concern while appearing as a BT Sport pundit when United beat Partizan Belgrade 3-0 in the Europa League on Thursday night.

While he believes Axel Tuanzebe could step up to the mark, the former United midfielder has his doubts about fellow defender Lindelof.

“I think possibly at centre-half they could need a partner for Maguire, although Tuanzebe looks a good option. I’m not sure about Lindelof,” Scholes said.

Liverpool transfer failure

Liverpool were beaten to the punch for Rodrygo because they tried to low-ball his former club Santos.

That’s according to former Santos coach Elano, who has revealed the Reds were seriously keen on the Real Madrid winger.

“There was a period when there was very strong interest from Liverpool for him to leave when he was still at base,” Elano told ESPN.

“The values were very low, but they wanted to have a go. Real’s offer afterwards was around €30m more! I had a conversation with the staff and said the boy was worth the bet.”
