Rockstar Games has announced their plans to host a new Red Dead Redemption 2 Online beta, starting today.

November 27 will see the first wave of players begin their multiplayer adventures, which will allow them a fair amount of freedom.

RDR2 Online will let players form up their own posses, hunt for treasure and take on other outlaws on a massive open world map.

So when does the RDR2 Online beta start on PS4 and Xbox One?

RED DEAD ONLINE BETA RELEASE DATES

As mentioned above, only a small group of players will actually get to start their RDR2 Online careers today.

Rockstar Games has confirmed that everyone who bought the Ultimate Edition of the game will be eligible to join live servers on November 27.

The good news is that the new beta is set to begin early in the UK, at around 1:30pm.

That means that even if Red Dead Redemption 2 servers do go offline, there should still be enough time in the day for players to get online.

And it appears the dev are ready for this to happen, with the latest news from Rockstar confirming: “To help us ease into the beta and to mitigate significant issues, we will begin the early access period starting Tuesday, November 27 at 8:30am EST, and gradually scale the player base up to full access beginning on Friday, November 30.

“This will help ensure that our servers can handle a steadily growing volume of concurrent players in the early hours and first days of the Beta and hopefully reduce the likelihood of any server crashes during the launch week as we get things up and running.”

From a platform perspective, there should not be any delay for Ultimate Edition players on either PS4 or Xbox One.

While Rockstar and Sony PlayStation do have an exclusivity deal covering specific content, this won’t affect this week’s beta.

For those who don’t have the Ultimate Edition, here’s when you will get access this week:

  • Tuesday, November 27th: All Red Dead Redemption 2: Ultimate Edition owners. Please note, players who purchased the physical Ultimate Edition must redeem the Ultimate Edition code in the packaging to be eligible.
  • Wednesday, November 28th: All players who played Red Dead Redemption 2 on October 26th according to our data.
  • Thursday, November 29th: All players who played Red Dead Redemption 2 between October 26th to October 29th according to our data.
  • Friday, November 30th: All players who own Red Dead Redemption 2.

HOW DO I ACCESS THE RED DEAD ONLINE BETA?

For those who are new to online gaming, owning a copy of Red Dead Redemption 2 will qualify you to play online.

You will need an active internet connection and whatever subscription required to play online, depending on what console you are using.

When booting up Red Dead Redemption 2 and arriving at the title menu, you will see an option in the top right of the screen to select Online.

Selecting this option should send you through to the Online version of the game, which is expected to include some kind of tutorial phase.

An intro has been hinted at in the game’s achievements and trophy list, so fans may need to breakout to start their adventures.

WHAT GAMEPLAY WILL BE AVAILABLE DURING BETA?

While Rockstar is calling this an online beta, it looks like most of the current content will be available to enjoy.

The development team has plans to add new stuff during Red Dead Online’s lifecycle, with plenty probably in the pipeline.

We’re not expecting all best content to be available when players first log in, although more on this subject is set to be shared today.

Rockstar has confirmed that more information will be shared before the first beta testers hit live servers.

Here’s what we know so far:

With the gameplay of Red Dead Redemption 2 as its foundation, Red Dead Online transforms the vast and deeply detailed landscapes, cities, towns and habitats of Red Dead Redemption 2 into a new, living online world ready to be shared by multiple players. Create and customise your character, tailor your abilities to suit your play style and head out into a new frontier full of things to experience.

Explore the world solo or with friends. Form or join a Posse to ride with up to seven players; gather around the fire at your Camp; head out hunting or fishing; visit bustling towns; battle enemy gangs and attack their hideouts; hunt for treasure; take on missions and interact with familiar characters from across the five states; or fight against other outlaws in both spontaneous skirmishes and pitched set-piece battles; compete with other players or whole Posses in open world challenges and much more.

HOW LONG WILL THE BETA LAST?

Rockstar Games will be calling this an online beta until servers have settled down and they have a grip on the kind of numbers that will be playing on PS4 and Xbox One.

It’s fair to say that disruption will likely last weeks and will require players to update their games to the latest version regularly. The good news is that progress made during beta will likely stay in place.

“The launch of the Red Dead Online Beta is the first step in what will be a continually expanding and dynamic world, and the beta period will allow us to deal with the inevitable turbulence of launching any online experience of this size and scale.

“During this process, we will be looking to our dedicated community to help us report and fix problems, share ideas, and assist in shaping the future of the full Online experience.

“As with all of our releases, we will strive to make the launch of Red Dead Online the best it can possibly be, and we ask that the community share that spirit with us over the next weeks and months.”

The Red Dead Redemption Online beta begins today and could be the start of another long-lasting multiplayer mode from Rockstar Games.
