Really Ready for Summer with Halfords – Tips for UK holidaymakers

We love to holiday at home – here’s how to do it better (Image: Halfords)

A holiday in the UK is a popular choice for many Brits – with 51 per cent of us not planning to head overseas this summer.

But holidaying at home can come with its worries, as a survey of 3,000 express.co.uk readers, in association with Halfords, has revealed.

Don’t get in a jam

A large number of those who shared their concerns about taking a break here in the UK cited traffic jams as their main bugbear.

Forty five per cent of those asked said traffic issues topped their list of worries.

Certainly, the prospect of spending a chunk of our precious time off – particularly with family – stuck on a motorway, isn’t exactly appealing.

Thankfully Halfords has a wide range of tech that can help you avoid traffic black spots.

Top of the list is the TomTom Go 520 Sat Nav, £169.99 (save £50), which has UK and Ireland maps and traffic alerts. Halfords has a wide range of sat navs available, many of which have 20 per cent off.

Of course, if there’s one thing worse than being stuck in a jam, it’s being the cause of it. Getting your car checked over by Halfords’ experts is a good idea, particularly before a long journey.

Book your car in for a Free Car Check online, or visit a Halfords store – there’s no appointment necessary – and trained colleagues will check your car bulbs and battery, plus your wiper blades, engine oil level, air conditioning and your windscreen for any chips. They’ll even give you a screen wash top-up – all for free.

The current summer heat wave also means that long periods stuck in traffic can be a hot, tiresome business, so it’s important to make sure your air conditioning is working at its best. During a Free Air Con Check, Halfords colleagues will check your refrigerant levels.

If they do need topping up, you can book in for Halfords’ air con recharge service.

If you’re wary about your long-distance journey then remember that dash cams are an increasingly popular source of reassurance for motorists. The Nextbase Duo HD Dash Cam, £159 (save £40), is one of many dash cams with 20 per cent off at Halfords.

Not only does it have a front and rear lens for front and rear protection – it also has 1080p HD resolution for crystal-clear recordings and inbuilt WiFi for easy downloads.

Get inspired

A summer holiday – particularly with the kids – needs plenty of good ideas to keep everyone entertained.

This may be why 28 per cent of express.co.uk readers said they yearned for more inspiration to fill the summer holidays.

Thankfully, the Express and Halfords have teamed up to provide plenty of great ideas to keep children happy this summer.

From suggestions to keep little ones active and outdoors, breathtaking places to watch the sun set, to Britain’s best family bike rides, there’s plenty to do.

Child’s play

Anyone who has had to keep the kids entertained over a six-week school summer holiday will know that cries of “I’m bored” are all too common.

In fact, 16 per cent of those asked in our poll said that they craved things to keep children entertained. (After all, happy kids means happy parents.)

Halfords is the UK’s leading bike retailer and has a wide range of cycles for kids.

Many bikes have 30 per cent off – including the Apollo Police Patrol Kids Bike, £56 (save £24), for ages 4-6, and the Apollo Roxie Kids Bike, £63 (save £27), for ages 5-8.

If scooting is more their thing, the Mongoose Stance Stunt Scooter, £40 (save £23), will keep them occupied – and safe, thanks to its non-slip deck and rear heel brake.

When it comes to toys for open spaces like parks, they’ll take delight in the Super Stomp Rocket Kit, £10, which allows them to fire rockets up to 400ft into the air, and the Nerf Mega Howler, £12.50, which can be thrown up to 90 meters, thanks to its clever aerodynamic design.

Happy campers

Camping remains a favourite of the UK-based holidaymaker.

But while we may love getting under canvas, 11 per cent of us wish we had better camping equipment.
