The Russian President branded the report compiled by Robert Mueller as “complete nonsense” which he had always said “would find no evidence” against Trump. According to Newsweek, Putin blamed the Democrats for having sour grapes as to why the probe was launched in the first place. Mr Mueller was tasked with finding out whether the US President had colluded with Russia during the 2016 elections.
On Tuesday, Putin claimed: “We said from the start that Mr Mueller’s notorious investigation would find no evidence.
“Therefore, it was clear to us in advance that it would end up as ‘The mountain gave birth to a mouse,’ as they say.
“President Trump knows better than us what a ‘witch hunt’ is. We know that this is a black page in American history.”
Reports from organisations such as the CIA and FBI refute Putin’s claims, stating they have “high confidence” Russia interfered during the election three years ago.
The Mueller Report found no evidence that Trump was involved, according to Attorney General William Barr.
He has promised to release a redacted version of the report within the week.
Putin’s comments come after Trump made the shock admission that he still hasn’t read the report.
Allegations were made after Trump beat rival Hillary Clinton to become president.
Despite being a vocal critic of the report, Trump took to Twitter to state he had not read it.
He wrote: “I have not read the Mueller report yet, even though I have every right to do so.
“Only know the conclusions, and on the big one, no collusion.”
Mr Mueller completed the report on March 22, just shy of two years from when he began the investigation.
