Plane crash advice – How to survive an emergency landing | Travel News | Travel

Plane crashes are extremely rare, with the likelihood of one occurring in every 11 million flights.

In 2017, there were no fatal crashes in aviation, making it one of the safest years in history.

Earlier this year, a plane crashed in Mexico yet miraculously no-one was killed.

Passengers who find themselves in a plane crash can do a number of things to ensure their survival.

Sensible clothing

When travelling, some people may choose to dress in smarter clothes to get an upgrade, or some of their holiday clothes to get ready for the beach.

These options could hinder an escape in the event of a crash landing.

Passengers should always make sure to wear things that cover the arms and legs to prevent abrasions and cuts.

Wearing the correct footwear could also save lives when trying to leave a plane in an emergency.

Flip flops will offer no protection when walking on dangerous grounds and broken materials so trainers and strong soled shoes will help.

Avoid a lot of alcohol

It can be tempting to take advantage of free drinks on a plane before a holiday.

However, this could quickly turn sour in an emergency when being intoxicated.

CNN transportation analyst Mary Schiavo told WSMV: “They’re going to be a big hazard in an evacuation.”

Passengers need to be aware of their surroundings and when drunk, their inhibitions are lowered and their movements slow down.

While a couple of drinks are okay, it is advised to stick to water to stay hydrated.

Learn where the exits are

Many passengers admit to ignoring the safety demonstration by flight attendants on a plane.

The main thing that could save a life is knowing how far the emergency exits are.

In a plane crash, it can be easy to panic so knowing whether to run to the front or the back of the plan for the nearest exit will save valuable seconds.

Counting the seats has also been advised by a travel expert when taking the correct seat when boarding.

This means if vision is compromised by darkness or smoke, passengers can count the headrests until they get to the exit.
