Olivia Colman: The Crown star on awkward Prince William encounter ‘Didn’t go very well’ | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

Olivia Colman, 45, is taking over from Claire Foy to portray Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown, which returns to Netflix next weekend. The British actress appears on tonight’s The Graham Norton Show where she spoke about whether she has met any royals since playing the important part.

Olivia revealed she had met Prince William recently, but their encounter could have gone a little better.

She told hold Graham Norton when he quizzed her about meeting any royals: “Yes, but it didn’t go very well.”

“I met Prince William at a dinner and he asked what I was doing at the moment before he quickly added, ‘Actually, I know what you’re doing’,” she recalled.

Olivia went on: “I was so excited and asked, ‘have you watched it?’ His answer was a firm, ‘No.’ But he was very charming and very lovely.”

Despite the huge pressure of playing the Queen, Olivia admitted she didn’t have a lot of training to perfectly mirror her actions and speech.

“I did nothing,” Olivia admitted. “Though I did have a movement coach, but still I walked like me, or rather like a farmer!”

Her co-star, Helena Bonham Carter, who plays Princess Margaret, chimed in: “I do everything to prepare and Olivia does nothing, and she ends up being completely brilliant.”

When asked about how they get on working together, the actress added: “It really is fun. We’ve been together for so long, but we still like each other.”

“There are hundreds of seat fillers so almost everybody is in the bar getting bladdered!”

Olivia and Helena will be joined by Chadwick Boseman, comedian and actor Richard Ayoade, lady in waiting Lady Anne Glenconner, and singer Niall Horan on the BBC One show tonight.

Meanwhile, Olivia had another encounter with a royal last week, as she received her CBE at Buckingham Palace.

However, the star wasn’t given the important honour by the Queen, but instead was welcomed by Princess Anne, 69.

Olivia exchanged a few words with Princess Anne and put on a chic display in a checked coat with flared sleeves.

She paired the outfit with black heeled mules and accessorised with a black lace adorned fascinator.

Olivia, who received the CBE under her real name Sarah Sinclair, declined to speak to reporters outside the ceremony but greeted palace staff as she left.

The Graham Norton Show airs tonight on BBC One at 10.40pm.

The Crown returns to Netflix on November 17.
