The Australian had fought back to level the match against Ruud at one set all and was break up in the third set.
But down break point, Kyrgios framed a forehand wide to hand back the break to Ruud.
Kyrgios then turned his ire at the crowd before slamming his racket to the floor.
He then kicked a water bottle and picked up a nearby stool and threw it across the court.
Kyrgios had received multiple code violations earlier in the match and the umpire was left with little choice but to default the 24-year-old from the match.
