The Isle of Wight NHS Trust said four patients were airlifted to hospital after the crash at 1.51pm in Forest Road. A spokeswoman for Isle of Wight NHS Trust said: “A major incident was declared at 13.51 today after a serious road traffic incident took place on Forest Road, Newport, involving two cars and a bus.
“The Isle of Wight NHS Trust can confirm that four people have been airlifted to mainland hospitals and currently 15 patients have been brought into St Mary’s Hospital.”
The spokeswoman said the airlifted patients were possibly taken to hospitals in Portsmouth or Southampton.
St Mary’s Hospital is in Newport.
Police have closed local roads including Forest Road from Gunville Road and there is no access from Betty Haunt Lane/Whitehouse Road.
Residents have been asked to avoid the area completely and respect the cordons and closures by officers.
Bus company Southern Vectis said the Route 7 via Shalfleet will be diverted via Calbourne and Elm Lane to Shalfleet in both directions.
Richard Tyldsley, Southern Vectis general manager, told Isle of Wight County Press: “We are aware of a serious collision today involving one of our route 7 buses.
“At this stage the full circumstances and details of any injuries are unclear and we are investigating.”
