There was lots of sex, lots of drugs and lots of rock’n’roll. That much everyone knows is true. But were Motley Crue really as outrageous as they appear in the new HBO biopic? The new movie is based on the 2001 best-seller The Dirt: Confessions of the World’s Most Notorious Rock Band. Written by the four band members – bassist Nikki Sixx, lead singer Vince Neil, lead guitarist Mick Mars and drummer Tommy Lee – it turns out that what really went on was even more shocking than what is shown on screen.
Back in 2015, Sixx told Classic Rock: “Anybody can make a sh***y rock movie. We don’t want to do that.
“A lot of people don’t understand rock music and the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle. It’s not just sex, drugs and car crashes. Those things happen – and, in our case, more than usual. But what’s at the core of it all is the creativity and the personal relationships between each band member. We don’t just want to slap together the thrill moments.”
That may be true, but most people do want to know about the craziest moments, and that scene showing Ozzy with a straw and line of ants is a humdinger.
But is it true?
Motley Crue supported Ozzy on tour when they were starting out and credit him with opening their eyes to the excesses and attractions of being rock gods.
According to Sixx in the book: “I handed him the straw, and he walked over to a crack in the sidewalk and bent over it. I saw a long column of ants, marching to a little sand dugout where the pavement met the dirt. And as I thought, ‘No, he wouldn’t,’ he did. He put the straw to his nose and, with his bare white ass peeking out from under the dress like sliced honeydew, sent the entire line of ants tickling up his nose with a single, monstrous snort.
“He stood up, reared back his head, and concluded with a powerful right-nostriled sniff that probably sent a stray ant or two dripping down his throat.”
Ozzy has also been asked about the incident.
In one old interview, he categorically said: “I have got absolutely no recollection of doing that.”
However, he has also reminded everyone that he can’t remember a lot of what happened to him during those crazy years.
In 2016, Ozzy told TeamRock at Brave Words: “I don’t snort ants anymore – I can’t even remember doing it in the f***ing first place. When you’re fuelled on drugs and alcohol, you do things to have a mind-altering experiences. But then you wake up and you don’t know how the f*** you got there. I just changed. Some people don’t – and they die.”
