The Czech film director passed away at his Connecticut home yesterday after a short illness.
Miloš leaves behind his wife Martina Zborilova-Forman and his four children.
The death was confirmed by his spouse, who broke the news to Czech news agency CTK.
She said: “His departure was calm and he was surrounded the whole time by his family and his closest friends.”
Express.co.uk has contacted a representative for Miloš Forman asking for comment.
Tributes for the star have poured in from across the world, with one post translating as: “I wake up and Milos Forman’s not there anymore. A great director of films.”
Another wrote: “Another genius and such a creative man has passed away!”
A third commented: “Accept my condolences in your deep sorrow.”
“Very sad news. The legendary director Milos Forman died. His videos will be with us forever,” penned a fourth.
Critic Guy Lodge wrote: “Farewell to Miloš Forman, who never made the same film twice, and never made one without interest.
“Now’s a good time to seek out the wonderful TAKING OFF if you’ve never seen it.”
English director Edgar Wright wrote on Twitter: “Very sad to hear that the great director Miloš Forman has passed away.
“He had a tremendous filmography that documented the rebel heart and human spirit.
“I have seen ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’ enough times to be able to silently mouth along with the movie. RIP.”
The director was born in the Czech town of Caslav on February 18, 1932, but moved to the United States in 1968, where he later became a US citizen.
The star was best known for directing hit films One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, Amadeus, and Man on the Moon.
Miloš was decorated with a number of accolades during his life, including BAFTA and Golden Globe awards.
The actor married three times, tying the knot with his first wife, Czech film star Jana Brejchová, back in 1958, but the pair divorced four years later.
He wed for a second time in 1964 to actress Věra Křesadlová-Formanová, with whom he had twin sons Petr and Matěj that year.
The couple separated in 1969, and divorced in 1999.
Miloš later found love with Martina, whom he married 19 years ago.
The couple welcomed twin sons James and Andrew Forman that year.
The asteroid 11333 Forman was named after the Academy award winning director.
