The 36-year-old superstar didn’t attend the annual fashion event last year as she was eight months pregnant with twins Rumi and Sir Carter, leaving the Beyhive desperate to see what she would wear for the Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination theme last night.
However, many were disappointed when the Coachella headliner never materialised on the red carpet, flooding to social media to share their confusion and concerns.
“BEYONCÉ WHERE YOU AT????” one begged, while another quipped: “Where in the heavenly bodies is Beyoncé?”
“Beyoncé please we need you where are you,” another asked, as a third tweeted: “It’s really not OK that Beyoncé may not show up tonight for the #MetGala. Somebody has to go to jail.”
Meanwhile, one Twitter user shared a snap of the empty steps of the Met, joking: “Beyoncé arriving as the Holy Ghost. Stunniiiiiiiiiiing.”(sic)
Another had the same idea, saying: “Lady Gaga and Beyoncé attend the #MetGala as Holy Spirit.”
According to reports, Beyoncé had been intending to step out for the star-studded event before her husband Jay-Z surprised her with a last-minute holiday.
A source told Entertainment Tonight: “Jay-Z surprised her with a trip because he felt she needed to relax before her tour.”
According to the publication’s insider, the former Destiny’s Child star even had a dress ready to go, with designer Peter Dundas working on the gown for weeks.
The couple, who married in 2008 and share Sir, Rumi and daughter Blue Ivy together, are set to embark on a mammoth joint tour next month.
A source told People: “The couple are expected in Paris in the coming days as they rehearse for their upcoming joint tour, which is the long-awaited sequel to their blockbuster 2014 duel headlining trek, On the Run.”
Fans had some other ideas as to why Beyoncé didn’t appear last night, with many joking she didn’t go because she had already dazzled with looks from the Heavenly Bodies theme over the past year.
“Beyoncé did not come for Met Gala 2018 ‘cause she was way ahead of them and already did that.”
“Beyoncé won this year’s #MetGala last year at the Grammys,” another said, referring to her jaw-dropping gold look at the awards show last February.
Sharing a clip from her performance at the Grammys, a third agreed: “Beyoncé already did the Met Gala theme back in 2017.”
Tweeting snaps from the Formation hitmaker’s recent projects, a fourth said: “It doesn’t even matter that Beyoncé isn’t attending this year’s #MetGala, seeing as she was already on theme last year.”
The last time she was seen attending the Met Gala was in 2016, when she showed off her curves in a skintight latex gown for the Manus x Machina: Fashion and Technology theme.
Two years earlier, she was caught up in a media storm after footage of her sister Solange Knowles lashing out Jay-Z in an elevator was leaked via TMZ.
The footage appeared to show the singer, 31, attempting to hit and kick her brother-in-law, with Beyoncé stood close by in the lift.
Shortly after, the group released a statement saying that they are “moving forward as a united family” following the incident.
“They both acknowledge their role in tis private matter that has played out in public,” the statement read.
Express.co.uk has contacted a representative for Beyonce asking for comment.
