Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are now excitedly expecting the arrival of their royal baby, with a due date forecast for later this month. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex married in their spectacular royal wedding ceremony in May 2018. They had a whirlwind romance in comparison to Kate Middleton and Prince William’s ten-year courtship, marrying less than two years after they met in July 2016.
News of their relationship broke in October 2016, and Prince Harry had a word of warning for Meghan when he learned of the leak.
Podcast “Royals”, from Australian magazine New Idea, heard from royal expert Angela Mollard in an episode that aired in May 2018.
Ms Mollard said that when news first broke of Harry and Meghan’s relationship, “a private secretary phoned and said: ‘Look, the word’s out. This has leaked.’”
She continued: “He apparently turned to Meghan and said: ‘Things will never be the same again.’
“He knew that. He knows what it’s like, he’s seen it with his brother, he’s seen it with his previous girlfriends.
“I can imagine he felt a little bit of sadness that that privacy had [gone].”
New Idea editor Frances Sheen agreed and said: “They never get that back.”
Ms Mollard added: “He rang William to ask his advice.
“Two things about this are interesting: one, that when in need, he turns to his brother.
“He didn’t turn to his dad, he turned to his brother.
“Secondly, what it led to was him releasing that fairly robust statement telling he media to back off.
“He was very forthright.”
Prince Harry’s office issued a statement that read in part: “Prince Harry is worried about Ms Markle’s safety and is deeply disappointed that he has not been able to protect her.
“It is not right that a few months into a relationship with him that Ms Markle should be subjected to such a storm.
“He knows that it is unusual to issue a statement like this, but hopes that fair-minded people will understand why he has felt it necessary to speak publicly.”
Alongside Prince William’s defence of Kate Middleton during their dating days, the royal brothers’ protection of Meghan and Kate has signalled a change in the way the Palace now looks after royal girlfriends.
Royal author Penny Junor describes how Princess Diana, in contrast, found press attention “unbearable” but had no Palace protection before her marriage as she was viewed as “just a girlfriend”.
Royal biographer Duncan Larcombe, speaking in 2018 documentary “Harry and Meghan: the first 100 days”, also added: “The Queen, in particular, has learnt from the lessons of the past.
“They know how badly affected Princess Diana was in the early years of her marriage, feeling that she joined this alien world that she couldn’t cope with.”
Harry and Meghan first met on a blind date in July 2016 and the news leaked four months later.
A source at the time told the Sunday Express that Harry was happier than he had been “for many years” and was “besotted” with Meghan.
