The 52-year-old announced he would be leaving his role as The Wright Stuff host back in May this year.
And today, the star told his 47,700 Twitter followers that he would host the Channel 5 daytime show for the final time this Thursday.
Confirming his departure on the social networking site today, Matthew told fans: “Last week of me on @5WrightStuff – 18+ years comes to an end Thursday!”
Fans rushed to show their support for the star with one writing: “Very sorry to see you go!!”
Another follower was quick to share their good wishes with the presenter, tweeting: “All the best – it won’t be the same without you.”
“Oh no! Gonna miss you so much. All the very best to you and yours for the future,” gushed another admirer.
A fourth commented: “You should be immensely proud. All the best for this week!”
Meanwhile, one devastated viewer told Matthew: “My mornings will never be the same again!
“I think I’ve been watching for about 16 of those years! BIG HUGS.”
Anne Diamond, Claudia-Liza Armah, and Richard Madeley are thought to be due to temporarily stand in for the star following his departure, before show bosses announce who will take over the show full-time.
Matthew was expected to step down from the Channel 5 show role next month, which one viewer was quick to point out online, asking the star: “What happened to staying until July?”
The Channel 5 favourite soon responded to the tweet, teasing: “I’ve got a great agent,” before adding a winking emoji.
The star first took on the self-titled show more than 18 years ago.
But, the presenter told viewers he was calling time on his Channel 5 gig back in May, during an episode of the morning TV show.
In a statement, the star said: “After almost 18 glorious years on Channel 5 and the show flying high in the ratings, I feel it’s time to move and try my hand at something new.”
Referring to the shock announcement on Twitter shortly after breaking the news, Matthew joked: “18.5 years of 4am starts and 8pm bed times. Can’t wait to rejoin the human race…”
The cheeky presenter’s remark saw him appear to tease that his departure would mean there would be less competition between the two shows.
It came as he retweeted a message from his representative Neil Reiding, beside which Matthew joked: “I bet Victoria Derbyshire will be thrilled.”
The Wright Stuff airs weekdays on Channel 5 from 9.15am.
