Hundreds of fans are understood to have forced entry onto the site and set a tree ablaze after spraying the entrance with smoke and fireworks, according to La Provence. The Marseille fans are believed to be demanding the resignation of club president Jacques Henri Eyraud.

Fans have hung several banners around the town and attempted to force entry into the training ground.

The words “Eyraud clears” and “Eyraud outside” were painted on the outside walls of the complex.

A video from the scene shows fans attacking the front gates as they attempt to gain entry.

Several moments later the protestors could be seen entering the training centre.

It comes after the club’s manager Andre Villas-Boas admitted recent results had been “awful”.

Asked about his contract, he said: “It looks like the end. I think it’ll all be over in June.

“I’m demanding nothing because looking at where we are it wouldn’t be right. And I think everyone agrees with that.

“I can’t see an extension materialising, we’re 13 points off the top.

“The place needs a clear out including myself, unless I get 10 straight wins maybe not.

“But I’m responsible for the results and right now they’re awful.”
