Manchester United have long admired Saul, with the Red Devils’ interest in the Atletico Madrid star dating back to Sir Alex Ferguson’s time in charge.
Ferguson thought the Spain international had potential when he was on loan at Rayo Vallecano but, ultimately, was unable to bring the player to Old Trafford before his retirement in 2013.
Manchester United have remained linked in the time ever since, with David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho all emulating Ferguson by failing to land a transfer.
Yet Spanish newspaper AS claim that Atletico expect them to come knocking at the end of the season.
The report claims that United are, yet again, set to try and bring Saul to Old Trafford when the transfer window reopens.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is likely to lose Ander Herrera on a free transfer.
The futures of midfield duo Fred and Andreas Pereira are also uncertain, meaning United are primed to invest in that area this summer.
AS say that Atletico ‘know’ United will try and land Saul as a replacement for Fred, Pereira, Herrera or even Paul Pogba.
Consequently, Diego Simeone’s side have offered the Spaniard a new contract – albeit without changing his £129million buyout clause.
But whether Saul responds positively remains to be seen.
Meanwhile, back in the summer, La Liga expert Guillem Balague claimed that United had turned down the chance to sign Saul three years ago.
That was when Van Gaal was in charge.
And Balague said: “Saul, finally people have realised the talent that this man has,” Balague told BBC 5 Live Sport.
“This is a man that as an 18-year-old was offered to Everton and they said no.
“As a 20-year-old he was offered to Manchester United and Manchester United said no.”
United have also been linked with a move for Saul’s Atletico team-mate Antoine Griezmann.
But Barcelona appear frontrunners in the race to sign the France international, who is keen to pursue a new challenge elsewhere.
