Liverpool 0-0 Chelsea LIVE: Super Cup score, goals and updates, Mane and Pulisic start | Football | Sport

LIVERPOOL 0-0 CHELSEA | SUPER CUP LIVE!

Liverpool XI: Adrian, Gomez, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Milner, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mane, Salah.

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Zouma, Emerson, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Pedro, Giroud, Pulisic.

  • N’Golo Kante recovers from a knee injury to start for Chelsea
  • Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is set to play in a front three
  • Jurgen Klopp has left forward Roberto Firmino on the bench

LIVERPOOL 0-0 CHELSEA

13: Fabinho should do better as the ball ricochets fortuitously into his path. He decides to shoot from an acute angle instead of fizz a cross into the middle and goalkeeper Kepa collects.

10: What a difference N’Golo Kante makes. Chelsea look far more solid and organised with the midfielder snapping at heels here, there and everywhere.

8: Penalty appeal! Christensen lifts his arms to protect his face as Mane connects with an acrobatic volley. Yes, the ball goes strike the arm – but I’m really not sure what the centre-back could have done.

Stéphanie Frappart checks VAR and we play on.

5: Virgil van Dijk is a touch fortunate to avoid a booking when clearly using his arm to prevent Pedro from collecting Jorginho’s pass over on the right. No booking and Azpilicueta lets referee Stéphanie Frappart know his thoughts.

3: Just like at Old Trafford on Sunday – Chelsea have started well. Knocking it about smartly and looking to release Christian Pulisic down the left channel. Olivier Giroud looks particularly eager to impress Frank Lampard having already been penalised for a foul on Virgil van Dijk.

LIVERPOOL 0-0 CHELSEA

1: Y’all ready? We’re underway in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup! What a time to be alive.

And they arrive… finally!

19:58: The ceremony is over. Thankfully. And the players have arrived onto the field, that’s adorned with three huge circular flags.

Both sides are lined up in the usual fashion – but what song are they going to play?

The Champions League anthem? The Europa League anthem? A meld of the two simultaneously? Or is there a UEFA Super Cup hymn?

The answer is… nothing apparently.

We are ready

19:55: Chelsea boss Frank Lampard: “This is for the team and the club. We have to have a realisation of what this cup means to the club. We know it and we are ready.”

On Olivier Giroud starting: “We have strikers to pick from. He is a threat in the box and I had to make some changes because we have a lot of games in a short space of time.”

Signed for a reason

19:54: Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, speaking to BT Sport: “It is a strong team you have to consider all the different circumstances and all the things that can happen the game.”

On Adrian starting: “We don’t have to think about it. We signed him, it was for a reason. He didn’t have a pre-season like other goalkeepers had.”

Oh dear…

19:50: Yep, you guessed it – we’re about to be subjected to an opening ceremony.

Never enjoyed, always held and rarely worth the effort. Quite similar to The Apprentice on BBC One.

Preparation…

19:48: Frank Lampard said he needed to freshen things up for tonight’s Super Cup because of his sides fixture schedule.

Chelsea travelled to Manchester United on Sunday, while Liverpool had the luxury of playing at Anfield on Friday night.

Two days extra rest and no distance traveled? I can see where Frank is coming from.

Twitter round-up

Calvin: Unpopular opinion I see Chelsea winning tonight. Liverpool ain’t as good as you guys think.

Usman: The inclusion of N’Golo Kante alone in the starting line-up has boosted my confidence from 30 to 70 per cent.

Dean: Jurgen Klopp might be the love of my life and I’m sound with that.

Good for you, Dean.

Who needs a holiday?

19:35: Not Sadio Mane apparently.

The Senegal international missed Liverpool’s pre-season preparations because he reached the Africa Cup of Nations final.

“For sure, I am ready to start,” he said. “Let’s do this. Tiredness is only here [in the head]. I don’t think I have had a holiday in seven years, so I’m used to it.”

Speak for yourself, Sadio. I’ve got a week booked in Benidorm and that ain’t changing.

What’s the prize fund?

19:30: I knew you were thinking how much sweet cashola will the winner get tonight. And I have the answer.

The total prize fund for the Super Cup stands at €8million (£7.4m).

The winners of Liverpool vs Chelsea will take home €4.5m (£4.16m) in prize money. The runners-up will collect €3.5m (£3.24m).

So I reckon £4.16million could probably cover Nathaniel Clyne’s £70k per week wages for a year…

We’ll give it everything

19:25: Frank Lampard has challenged Chelsea to “give it everything” in their Super Cup final showdown with Liverpool.

Lampard was twice a losing finalist in the competition as a Blues player in 2012 and 2013 but now has the opportunity to get his hands on a first piece of silverware since becoming the club’s head coach over the summer.

“We need to be absolutely ready,” Lampard told uefa.com. “It’s a cup that the club desperately wants to win. I’ve never won it, a lot of players in there have never won it, so we have to give it everything.

“Every player in there needs to be aware of the importance of the game to this club and we have to give everything, because it’s going to be tough.”

Who’s in?

19:20: Well this thing might as well be at Anfield.

As I said earlier, the Reds have taken 5,973 tickets for the game compared to 1,314 for Chelsea – but ALL the other tickets for the 41,000-capacity stadium appear to have been bought by Liverpool supporters.

History

19:15: Stephanie Frappart will make history when she becomes the first female official to take charge of a major UEFA’s men competition showpiece – a moment Irish assistant Michelle O’Neill hopes will inspire the next generation.

The Super Cup meeting between Champions League winners Liverpool and Europa League holders Chelsea will not only be an interesting occasion but a momentous one too.

Frappart, who refereed July’s Women’s World Cup final and has officiated in Ligue 1 matches, will take charge of the UEFA Super Cup at Besiktas Stadium, becoming the first female official to take charge of a major UEFA men’s competition event.

“Of course we feel ready,” the 35-year-old said on the eve of the game. “We train a lot, all the time, we’re not afraid about this game as we’re always ready for all the games.”

Twitter round-up

Sandal: Kurt Zouma in the starting eleven comes as a surprise after the shocker he had at Old Trafford. Perhaps selling David Luiz was not a wise decision, with Antonio Rüdiger still injured.

Thomas: A bit of rotation from Klopp makes sense (nice to see Sadio Mane back and Ox get a start again), still a more than strong enough Liverpool team to really go for the Super Cup – might as well do that now that we’re here on merit and hopefully get an early trophy!

Rodney: Don’t forget to pray for Chelsea tonight.

Short and sweet from Rodney this evening. Glad to hear you’re optimistic about Chelsea’s chances.

Mildly interesting

19:05: Super Cup sides are allowed to make 12 substitutions this evening – but Liverpool only have nine outfield players on the bench. Do whatever you want with that information.

Team News – Chelsea

19:00: Frank Lampard hasn’t been panicked into making wholesale changes – but he’s made a few.

Christian Pulisic, N’Golo Kante and Olivier Giroud all return to the starting XI with Ross Barkley, Mason Mount and Tammy Abraham dropping to the bench.

Even better news for Blues fans is the sight of Antonio Rudiger and Willian return to the squad – they could feature at some point this evening.

Team News – Liverpool

18:55: So… what has Jurgen Klopp gone for? Well it appears that he’s rested Trent Alexander-Arnold with Joe Gomez slotting in at right-back with Joel Matip alongside Virgil van Dijk.

Elsewhere Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino is on the bench – leaving Mohamed Salah to lead the line with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in behind with Sadio Mane.

James Milner also gets the nod ahead of Georginio Wijnaldum in midfield.

The sides

18:50: Liverpool have announced their side. Adrian starts between the sticks, as expected, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is included in the starting XI. N’Golo Kante and Christian Pulisic start for Frank Lampard’s side.

Liverpool XI: Adrian, Gomez, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson, Fabinho, Milner, Henderson, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Mane, Salah

Subs: Lonergan, Kelleher, Alexander-Arnold, Hoever, Wijnaldum, Lallana, Shaqiri, Elliott, Brewster, Origi, Firmino.

Chelsea XI: Kepa, Azpilicueta, Christensen, Zouma, Emerson, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Pedro, Giroud, Pulisic.

Subs: Caballero, Rudiger, Alonso, Zappacosta, Tomori, Mount, Kennedy, Gilmour Barkley, Batshuayi, Abraham.

History

18:45: It is the first time in history two English clubs have reached the Uefa Super Cup in the same year.

But are Liverpool taking it more seriously?

I only ask because the Reds have taken 5,973 tickets for the game at Besiktas’ 41,000-capacity stadium, compared to 1,314 for Chelsea.

He’s out

18:43: Liverpool have confirmed that midfielder Naby Keita suffered a muscle strain around the hip area in last night’s training session. He will not feature tonight.

Not hopeful

18:40: Chelsea have just tweeted asking how their fans were feeling ahead of tonight’s clash.

The first three comments were: “We’re losing very comfortably”, “Keep the scoreline in single digits please” and “Forfeit the match!”

I suspect this comes off the back on Sunday’s nightmare start for Frank Lampard in his first competitive game in charge.

Losing 4-0 Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side at Old Trafford was nothing short of a disaster – while Liverpool romped to a 4-1 victory against newly promoted Norwich.

Super Cup

18:35: This was the part where I was going to provide you with a history lesson about the Super Cup.

My bosses said nobody would enjoy that – but I intend to subject you to a lecture anyway.

The European Super Cup was created in 1971 by Anton Witkamp, a reporter and later sports editor of Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

… I’ve just Googled it and it’s not particularly interesting. I’ll just hit you with some team news. Standby.

Evening…

18:30: Wait… Liverpool. In Istanbul. In European competition? Now why does that give me Déjà vu?

Hello everyone and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Liverpool vs Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup.

I’m not obligated to write “UEFA” before “Super Cup” but it feels way more official when I include the governing body.

No idea why I’m rambling.

Anyway, Istanbul will always have a special place in the hearts of Liverpool supporters after the Champions League final in 2005, when Rafael Benitez’s side came from three goals down to secure a 3-3 draw with AC Milan before winning on penalties.

And Chelsea? Well Frank Lampard has a golden opportunity to put things write after Sunday’s disaster and pick up his first piece of silverware as manager.

LIVERPOOL vs CHELSEA | TEAM NEWS

Chelsea midfielder N’Golo Kante is a doubt for tonight’s clash having picked up an injury against Manchester United on Sunday.

However, Frank Lampard’s side are boosted by the return of forward Willian and defender Antonio Rudiger from injury.

Liverpool keeper Alisson Becker’s injury will keep him out for “the next few weeks”, Jurgen Klopp confirmed.

The 26-year-old Brazilian damaged a calf during Friday night’s 4-1 Premier League victory over Norwich and while the club has put no timescale on his recovery.

Adrian is expected to start while defender Dejan Lovren had not travelled with the squad.
