Photos and videos show black smoke rising high into the sky over the Enderby area. The heavy plumes are visible from the M69 motorway and locals have been told to shut their windows. Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said it had initially sent two fire engines to the scene but due to the sheer scale of the incident it called in back-up.
The service said: “Desford road, Enderby – fire crews are dealing with a number of pallets involved.
“Residents in the local area should close doors and windows if being affected by the smoke.”
The service said they received a call about the fire at around 11.45am.
Highways England said the M69 had been closed in both directions.
Police are at the scene and have closed off surrounding roads.
Leicester Police said the closures are expected to last for up to four hours.
The force said: “Traffic update at 13:29: Junction 21 of M1/M69 and Junction 2 closed -both north and southbound.
“Also between Beggars Lane/Mill Hill and Mill Hill/Leicester Lane Enderby due to large fire – closed for health and safety reasons.
“Closure to be at least 3-4 hours- updates to follow.”
The M1 motorway has also been affected by the fire.
Google traffic maps show cars queueing at Junction 21 for the M69.
