Labour leader Keir Starmer admits EU exit debate is ‘over’ | UK | News

He also admitted the party’s attitudes towards leaving the EU, which he partly managed as shadow Brexit secretary, had been damaging. In an interview with the Sunday Telegraph, Sir Keir said the only focus now for the party is “what sort of a deal we have with the EU and what sort of deals we have with the rest of the world”.

He also said he wanted Labour to be “proudly patriotic”, possibly signalling a break from Jeremy Corbyn’s style of leadership.

Speaking to the Sunday Telegraph, Sir Keir said: “We’ve left the EU, and therefore, the Leave/Remain argument is over and the only argument now is what sort of a deal we have with the EU and what sort of deals we have with the rest of the world.

“It’s very important for the Labour Party to be clear that whatever position we and others have taken in the last three and a half, four years, that divide between Leave and Remain is now over.”

When asked whether he will try to get the UK to rejoin the EU if he wins the next general election in 2024, he said: “I don’t think there’s a case for rejoining the EU and I’m certainly not making that case.”

He added: “I’m proud that we’re patriotic, I don’t think we should be shy about it, I think it is something we should be very proud of and I think the fact thousands and thousands of activists give up their free time to try and improve our country is a real reflection of just how patriotic, they are.”

The Labour leader has reportedly said he would not refuse to attend a state banquet given in hour of the US president as Mr Corbyn did last year.

Sir Keir said: “I’ve never shied away from these events.

Sir Keir has said that he wants his policies and ideas to be challenged.

Sir Keir is inviting non-Labour activists to his “Call Keir” events which he is currently doing virtually twice every Thursday.

He said: “I am keen to make absolutely clear that the Labour Party wants to appeal very broadly across the whole population … it’s very, very important to be clear about reaching out, wanting to reach all sections of society.

“I actually want people who are not Labour voters and I want them to challenge me, be frank with me and be blunt with me.

“So my preference is to speak to those people around the country rather than having rallies of Labour members and supporters.”

Sir Keir has been MP for Holborn and St Pancras since 2015 before becoming the Leader of the Labour Party since April 4.

From 2016 to early 2020, he was Shadow Exiting the European Union secretary.

On Wednesday, the Government published documents which confirmed there will need to be checks on some goods entering Northern Ireland from the rest of the UK from January 2021 when the Brexit transition period has ended.

However, it reportedly rejected the EU’s demands for new infrastructure to be introduced to carry out checks.

The Government will instead expand existing border screening to carry out the additional checks.
