intelligence minister Mahmoud Alavi has said that it will be the fault of others if Tehran changes its nuclear programme to produce warheads. Speaking to Iranian media Mr Alavi said: “The leadership of Iran has explicitly stated that the production of nuclear weapons is against Sharia law, and the Islamic Republic forbids it. However, if a cat gets backed into a corner, it may act as it wouldn’t have acted while free.”

Mr Alavi stressed that Tehran’s nuclear program is peaceful and claims the nation has no intention to build a nuclear arsenal.

However, he said this is how Iran would act under “normal circumstances.”

The intelligence minister hinted the nation was not “under normal circumstances” because of prolonged US sanctions.

He demanded the US must immediately lift the sanctions against Iran.

“We wait for the other side to fully fulfill its commitments; then, we will follow the path of returning to our obligations.”

Under the JCPOA, Iran agreed to limit its nuclear ambitions in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions.

The deal was signed by China, Russia, Britain, France, Germany, and the EU.

However, the Biden administration said Iran must restore its obligations under the JCPOA before the US sanctions can be lifted.

As US president Biden said the US won’t be making the first move, Iran has been enriching uranium closer to weapons-grade levels.

On Monday spokesperson for the Biden administration, Jen Psaki, said: “Overall, his position remains exactly what it has been.

“Mr Biden’s position is that if Iran comes into full compliance with its obligations under the JCPOA, the United States would do the same.”

On Sunday, Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei urged the US to lift all sanctions if it wants Iran to live up to the commitments of the 2015 deal.
