Instagram and Snapchat Stories just dropped GIF Stickers via GIPHY app | Tech | Life & Style


Unable to add a GIF to your or Snapchat Story? Don’t worry, you’re not alone.

The hugely-popular social networks have temporarily dropped support for GIPHY’s moving GIF Stickers.

The decision was made after users noticed a racist GIF as an option to add to their social media images.

Snapchat first confirmed the decision to pull support for GIPHY.

In a statement issued to TechCrunch, the social network said: “As soon as we were made aware, we removed the GIF and have disabled GIPHY until we can be sure that this won’t happen again . . . while we wait for GIPHY’S team to take a look at it.”

Snapchat confirmed that all GIFs available within its application should be rated PG, which means they’re suitable for ages 13 and older.

Only teenagers over the age of 13 are allowed to hold an account with Snapchat.

Snapchat only recently integrated support for GIPHY in late February, enabling users to jazz-up their photos and videos with moving images curated by the team at GIPHY.

Instagram has followed Snapchat’s footsteps and also pulled support for the popular moving images.

The update is slowly rolling-out to users at the moment. It could take some time for your smartphone app to update to reflect the changes.

A spokesperson for Instagram confirmed: “This type of content has no place on Instagram.

“We have stopped our integration with GIPHY as they investigate the issue.”

Speaking to TechCrunch, a spokesperson for GIPHY said: “A user discovered an offensive GIF sticker in our library, and we immediately removed it per our content guidelines.

“After investigation of the incident, this sticker was available due to a bug in our content moderation filters specifically affecting GIF stickers.

“We have fixed the bug and have re-moderated all of the GIF stickers in our library.

“The GIPHY staff is also further reviewing every GIF sticker by hand and should be finished shortly.

“We take full responsibility for these recent events and sincerely apologise to anyone who was offended.”

The slip-up is embracing for Instagram’s parent company, Facebook.

The Californian social network recently launched a Facebook Messenger Kids app, targeted at young children.

The messaging platform also includes GIPHY support, although it is only supposed to show G-rated imagery.
