How to get rid of spiders: Keep spiders away from your home with this £1.50 essential oil

Spiders in the home can be distressing and annoying, with numbers rising as Autumn begins.

September marks the start of “spider season”, where the male population of spiders head indoors to find females to mate with, resulting in an influx of home-invading insects.

While spiders are rarely harmful, they are not usually wanted in the home.

Chemicals and harsh killers aside, there are many cheap, simple and effective ways of getting rid of spiders, including peppermint oil.

Oils and scents

Peppermint oil is known as a spider repellant, with the strong smell keeping the creepy crawlies at bay.

Costing as little as £1.50 a bottle, the essential oil can be mixed with water and spritzed around the home.

Just add 15 drops of essential oils to a spray bottle and spritz, with tea tree oil, lavender, rose and cinnamon also working.

The smell of citrus is also a known turn-off for insects, with spiders being no exception.

Spiders hate the smell of anything citrus and using lemon-scented cleaners, polish and burning citronella candles will all help repel them.

Vinegar

Another substance that is known to repel spider is vinegar, which can be used in the same way as peppermint oil.

Mix a spray bottle with half white vinegar and half water and spray in nooks and crannies around the house.

Conkers

One age-old method that is known to repel spiders is putting conkers in the corners of rooms.

Conker season is about to begin, and with hundreds of them littering the floors of parks and gardens, its a cheap and easy way to keep spiders at bay.

Conquers are said to contain a chemical that deters spiders, with the same going for ostrich eggs.

Other tips

Mating aside, spiders also venture into the home in search of food, munching on other insects such as flies.

Keeping the home clean and dust free will decrease the number of pests, also providing fewer places for them to hide.

Regularly vacuuming and keeping lights turned off will make the home less inhabited or enjoyable for all insects.

Some of the other insects that invade Britons homes are moths, cockroaches and woodlice.

Earlier this month, Alice Beer on This Morning showed viewers and presenters, Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, how to deal with various insects and pests.

Alice revealed the easy ways to get rid of moths, spiders, cockroaches and woodlice.
