Helen Skelton: Countryfile star admits embarrassing truth above big move to France | Celebrity News | Showbiz & TV

Helen Skelton, who has hosted BBC’s Countryfile since 2008, relocated to France after her spouse Richie Myler transferred to the Catalans Dragons.

The 35-year-old and her rugby player partner, who wed five years ago, swapped the UK for Perpignan with their then only child Ernie.

However, the language caused problems for the presenter, especially when trying to interact with the team’s WAGs.

“When Rich signed to Catalans Dragons we moved to France and it was a tough learning curve,” the small screen favourite started.

Helen continued: “I didn’t speak the language and I felt so isolated that I used to go into the local tourist office just to talk to someone who could speak English.

“The loneliness was crushing even though the French wives and girlfriends would invite me on their nights out, which was kind.”

The mother-of-two went on: “I would try to keep up by laughing and nodding – then somebody would ask if I understood and I would say no.

“They thought I was bonkers,” she quipped, during an interview with the Daily Mail’s You Magazine.

However, things quickly improved for Helen and she got to grips with the language and made friends near to where she lived.

During her time across the channel, the couple welcomed their second son, Louis, early last year.

Helen gave birth on her kitchen floor with the fire brigade arriving who, of course, had no experience of delivering a baby.

“Luckily a friend was with me when I went into labour,” she recalled. “There I was on my hands and knees, with Ernie hitting me on the head with a plastic sword because he thought I was playing monsters.

“That is what little boys think you’re doing when you’re on your knees barking in pain. It was very surreal.”

Despite being happy to stay, Helen and Richie moved back home to the UK last year, and she was again the “new girl in town”.

The 28-year-old moved to play for the Leeds Rhinos, after previously playing for Warrington Wolves, Salford City Reds and Widnes Vikings.

It comes after she was all smiles as she paused for a snap with fellow TV presenters Nick Baker and JB Gill this week, during a day of filming for their new Channel 5 series Big Week at The Zoo.

Helen was pictured spending time at Yorkshire Wildlife Park in Doncaster, as the presenter filmed for the upcoming show.

She let fans take a sneak peek at her day, as she uploaded a series of captures on her Instagram account in view of her 95,900 followers.

In one snap, the TV presenter was joined by her co-presenters – naturalist Nick, 46, and former JLS singer JB, 31.

Helen opted for a very summery ensemble, as she stepped out in a blue denim dress, which was cinched in at the waist.
