Grant Shapps says restaurants and bars could be reopened by summer | UK | News

The Transport Secretary told the coronavirus daily briefing that UK businesses including bars and restaurants want to open and start trading again. Mr Shapps stated that the Government was planning for an “outdoor summer” if conditions allowed it.

Mr Shapps said: “Therefore as conditions allow and not until July we will be looking to support creative ways for businesses to reopen while maintaining social distancing.

“We know restaurants and bars will want to start trading again and we will work with them so that we can enjoy an outdoor summer in a safe and responsible environment.”

At the time of writing, Britain has the fifth-highest number of COVID-19 cases in the world.

The UK has more than 254,000 cases in total at the time of writing.

The death toll in Britain is currently over 36,000.

Worldwide there have been more than 5.3 million COVID-19 cases.

The death toll has reached more than 340,000.

More than 2.1 million people have recovered from the coronavirus across the globe.

The United States has the highest amount of COVID-19 cases in the world with more than 1.6 million confirmed cases.
