The pregnant star, who attended the star-studded ceremony alongside her Strictly Come Dancing pro beau Gorka Marquez, 28, on Wednesday night, spilled all about meeting Prince Charles, 70, on Hits Radio the following morning. Gemma Atkinson, 34, said she had grown nervous while waiting to be introduced to the royal, saying: “He came round and I was watching everyone and suddenly I started panicking because I realised I was the only one in the group with a baby bump. I clocked all of the other girls and a lot of them had wedding rings on and stuff,” she laughed. “I was thinking, oh my gosh, oh my gosh, I’m having a child out of wedlock — he’s going to judge me!”
Gemma, who is expecting her first child with Gorka later this year, explained she had tried to fake being engaged to the Spanish dancer by putting a ring on her left ring finger.
“I started trying to get a ring off my right hand to put on my left hand but ‘cos my hands were so clammy I was struggling,” she said, much to the amusement of her Hits Radio co-hosts.
“Anyway I quickly changed the ring finger, I was like okay…
“And then he came and the lady said, ‘This is Gemma from Hits Radio,’” Gemma recalled. “He said, ‘Ah, Hits Radio, yes, up in Manchester.’
“I said, ‘Yes, Charles, but we broadcast nationally but we’re based in Manchester.’ I said, ’It’s great because it’s near my house,’” she quipped, as her fellow presenters fell about laughing.
“It is isn’t it!” she chuckled.
The former Strictly finalist revealed the encounter had gone smoothly and even said she thought Prince Charles believed she was engaged or married to Gorka.
“He thanked me for being there and he thought I was engaged or married with child, so I didn’t feel that bad,” she declared.
Gemma and Gorka put on a loved-up display when they arrived at the Prince’s Trust Awards earlier this week, posing together on the red carpet and looking the picture perfect couple.
He looked dapper in a sharp navy suit and dress shoes while she showcased her baby bump in a patterned wrap dress.
The former Hollyoaks and Emmerdale actress paired the ensemble with nude stiletto court shoes and a silver clutch bag.
The couple first met when Gemma competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2017 and later confirmed their romance after the live tour in February 2018.
Last month, they confirmed they are expecting their first child.
At the Prince’s Trust Awards, the pair found themselves in an odd situation when an announcer referred to Gorka as Gemma’s “fiancé”.
In a video which she shared with her 934,000 Instagram followers, she could be seen greeting Prince Charles on the big screen as an announcer said: “Gemma is an actress and best known for starring in the soap opera Hollyoaks, a good few years ago now, also on Emmerdake, and appeared on Strictly, of course, where she met her now fiancé Gorka Marquez.”
In the background, Groka’s voice sounded surprised, exclaiming: “‘Fiancé’?! I didn’t know that!”
