Gardeners’ World presenter Monty Don, 65, told fans it was a “big day” as he started the process. He shared four pictures of the garden at his Tudor farmhouse on Instagram in view of his 748,000 followers today. Photos showed the changes he had made so far as he gradually transforms it due to a common issue.

He captioned the post: “Big day – the box hedging in the Jewel Garden – ravaged by blight – is being dug up and burnt.

“The end of a chapter, but the start of a new one.”

Last month, the gardener told fans he had made the “sad” decision to change his garden.

He said his box hedging used to be “one of the best things about the garden especially in winter”.

The Gardeners’ World presenter has previously revealed that the inspiration behind the garden he shares with wife Sarah was in celebration of the couple’s jewellery business, launched in the 1980s.

Monty wrote “everything revolves around” their Jewel garden on his official website.

The couple, who married in 1983, live in Herefordshire.

They have two sons Adam and Tom together, as well as daughter Freya.

In 2016, he discussed his “informal” relationship with his children in an interview with Radio Times.

He said: “I work with Adam, and speak to him every day as he runs the farm. He’s lambing at the moment.

“The others – I’ll ring up, we chat, share books, music, tell each other what we’ve done and see.

“I love my children, I adore them, I would die for them, kill for them. We’re very honest with each other.”

Monty Don’s American Gardens continues tomorrow at BBC Two at 8pm.
