Samsung has announced the Galaxy Z Flip, its next foldable smartphone that – unlike the Galaxy Fold that opens and closes like a paperback best-seller – flips open and shut while still retaining a familiar smartphone look and feel. Although the South Korean tech stayed pretty tight-lipped on the specs of the device, its design featured prominently. The Z Flip comes with a pliable OLED display that isn’t plastic this time around. Instead Samsung is covering the phone’s panel with “ultra thin glass” that should make it much more durable than other folding phones on the market.
Of course, we’ll have to wait and see if the device can withstand more abuse than the original models of the Galaxy Fold that were infamously brittle and caused Samsung to delay the phone’s release.
When open, the Z Flip looks very similar to other flagship Samsung phones on the market. The device comes with an all-screen design with a single centred hole punch à la Galaxy Note 10 and Galaxy S20.
On its outside, Samsung’s latest foldable venture comes in either Mirror Purple, Mirror Black or Mirror Gold colours. Each of which is pretty reflective, so you should be able to see different shades of colour depending on the angle light is striking it.
Camera-wise, the Z Flip comes with two rear cameras, although Samsung didn’t discuss the function or megapixel count of either.
Samsung also made a big song and dance about the Z Flip’s new hinge on-stage in San Francisco. The firm claims the device should be able to withstand over 200,000 folds in total.
Announcing the Z Flip, Samsung said: “As the world’s first foldable glass smartphone, the Galaxy Z Flip’s revolutionary form factor opens up a whole new world of mobile experiences, and gives you even more options to express yourself.
“Compact and portable when folded, the Galaxy Z Flip features an innovative freestop folding system that enables the device to stay open at a range of angles, giving you a never-before-seen mobile experience.
“From expressive video calls to dynamic selfies and videos, you can capture, connect, and share more with your phone, all hands-free. When fully opened, the Galaxy Z Flip’s Infinity Flex Display, which features Samsung Ultra Thin Glass (UTG), transforms seamlessly into an immersive multimedia hub so you can enjoy all the content you love with more space.”
All the Z Flip’s advanced technologies come at high price. The Samsung handset will retail for $1,380 (roughly £1,064) and will be available from February 14.
