Rojo has emerged as a target for Everton with the Argentinian centre-back not joining United during their recent pre-season tour to America.
Although Rojo signed a new deal in March until 2021 with the option of an extra year, that was done chiefly to protect his market value.
As well as Everton, Wolves are understood to have expressed interest in Rojo, but Goodison Park is a more realistic destination for the 27-year-old.
Rojo has made 107 appearances for United in all competitions since arriving from Sporting Lisbon in 2014, scoring just two goals.
However, if Marco Silva doesn’t get his reported target, teamtalk claim that he will attempt to lure Chris Smalling or Victor Lindelof to Goodison Park.
Everton are reportedly happy to sign Smalling on a permanent deal, whilst Lindelof would be a loan option.
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho is on the hunt for a new centre-back, seemingly opening the door to a departure.
Yerry Mina, Toby Alderweireld and Harry Maguire have all been linked in recent weeks as well as Bayern Munich’s Jerome Boateng.
Mourinho wants two signings but, speaking recently, said one would be ‘fine’.
The United boss said: “I am confident I will get one, but I think two I am not going to get – which is not a drama.
“In every pre-season it happens the same, with every club, which is that the manager wants more.
“It’s our nature, you always want more for your team, but then club decisions are different and normally you don’t get what you want, which happened during all my career.
“So, if I get one player until the end of the market, that’s fine.”
