The pair had been expected to meet on the sidelines of this week’s G20 summit in Argentina. But Mr Trump today tweeted he was calling off the planned talks because of Russia’s aggression towards Ukraine. Tensions between Russia and Ukraine boiled over on Saturday when Russian forces opened fire on Ukrainian naval vessels and captured their crews.
Mr Trump said: “Based on the fact that the ships and sailors have not been returned to Ukraine from Russia, I have decided it would be best for all parties concerned to cancel my previously scheduled meeting in Argentina with President Vladimir Putin.
“I look forward to a meaningful Summit again as soon as this situation is resolved!”
Ukraine says Russia is blockading the Sea of Azov, which is shared by the two countries.
Moscow denies the claims and Mr Putin this week accused Ukrainian leader Petro Poroshenko of forcing the naval clash to boost his poll numbers ahead of an election next year.
