Dog thrown over bridge to die – Romania crisis as pets abandoned during lockdown | Nature | News

The terrified pet was saved by Paws2Rescue last Sunday after being cruelly abandoned by her owner. She was thrown into a river but managed to climb onto the base of the bridge.

The dog was spotted by a young boy who returned three days later and saw she was still there.

He lowered a bucket on a rope with pet food and called for help.

The fire brigade were needed to reach the dog due to the height of the bridge.

Paws2Rescue described it as a “very harrowing rescue”.

The dog, now called Esther, is in a foster home and will be put up for adoption.

Paws2Rescue founder Alison Standbridge warned that people in Romania are abandoning their pets at an “alarming rate” amid the coronavirus crisis.

She said: “In the last week alone our rescuers have picked up over 40 dogs and puppies – all abandoned pets – and there has been no sign of easing up.”

The charity’s rescuers are risking fines by going out to feed the strays as people are only allowed to leave home for a limited number of reasons.

Ms Standbridge added: “Every day in Romania life on the streets for any dog is horrific, but in the current lockdown period it is becoming life threatening as the dogs are struggling to find food.

“Every single day we are saving hundreds of lives across Romania but we can only continue to do this with the support of dog lovers.”

The charity’s other recent rescues include three puppies who were eating a dead sibling on a deserted industrial estate.

They also picked up an adorable white and brown dog and a tiny puppy who had been dumped on the streets.

The charity saved a dog who had been hit by a car and left at the side of the road unable to move.

And they rescued a three-legged puppy who had been abandoned in the woods.

Paws2Rescue, of which comedian and animal lover Ricky Gervais is patron, works to help stray dogs in Romania.

The charity is run by volunteers and is funded by donations from the public.
