Strictly Come Dancing finalist Debbie McGee, 60, told her listeners her late husband Paul Daniels wanted them to tie the knot on April Fool’s Day. But Debbie admitted she refused to marry him on such a day prompting the pair to tie the knot on the 2nd April instead. On the topic of April Fool’s Day, she told her listeners: “Paul wanted to get married on April Fool’s Day and I wouldn’t, so we got married on April the 2nd instead,” but changing the subject swiftly, she added: “Anyway enough of that.” The couple first met when Debbie started performing with him as a magician’s assistant at his shows.
Ten years later, they married in 1988 up until his death in 2016 in which he passed away aged 77 following a brain tumour.
A year later, the radio host competed on Strictly with Giovanni Pernice, 28, and made it to the final.
Last week, Debbie McGee opened up about the possibility of finding love again.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, Debbie admitted to feeling “vulnerable” after Paul’s death and insisted she couldn’t think about dating anyone else.
But now, Debbie admitted she feels differently.
She said: “I’ve realised, waiting, that I’m just really finding my feet of who I am as a person.
“I feel that I’m so different now to how I was a month after he died and I’m glad I didn’t rush into a relationship then.”
The former magician’s assistant went on to say she believes she could move on now, but “it has to be the right person”.
She added: “I’ll come to a time that I’ll meet someone who’s probably very different to Paul.”
Debbie also candidly revealed Paul and her spoke about her future love life ahead of his death.
Amid noting their 20-year age gap, she added: “From the very beginning we discussed it.
“He said, ‘Make sure you don’t go with someone who’s left handed because they won’t be able to use my golf clubs.’”
Debbie also joked if she had died before Paul, he would’ve found a new girlfriend within a month.
She said he often joked about who would wash his shirts and cook for him, as she laughed: “Because he couldn’t do that.”
Meanwhile, earlier this week, Debbie shared a throwback of her and Paul from their wedding day to celebrate what would’ve been their 31st anniversary.
The couple were seen smiling proudly for the camera while sat behind a table of flowers.
She commented: “31-years-ago today I married this very special man.”
