Living without hot water or central heating is a major challenge, especially in the midst of one of the coldest winters for years.
Shona Eyre, energy expert at uSwitch.com, said boiler breakdown can be a nightmare: “It is especially dangerous for the elderly, vulnerable, those with babies and the chronically ill.”
Your first step is to check whether you are covered by your home insurance policy, as some policies include boiler cover as standard.
Eyre said those who need to borrow money for repairs should consider a credit card charging zero interest on purchases for an introductory period to spread the cost.
Another option is to buy a specialist type of insurance known as boiler cover or home emergency cover.
This is sold by a range of companies including British Gas, Surewise, 24/7 Home Rescue and YourRepair.
Premiums range from £6 to more than £20 a month, depending on how much protection you buy.
Eyre said it is also wise to consider a plan that includes an annual boiler service to reduce the risk of a breakdown.
