Coronavirus conspiracy: Academic reveals social media spreading harmful COVID-19 fake news | Science | News

“The general perspective for me to start with is how a lot of these conspiracy theories are not just random fringe ideas.

“They’re usually narratives designed specifically to support fringe ideologies, typically those less well served by facts.

“And they are designed to promote an idea or value the designer had in the first place.

“This happens much more often in the form of investigative journalism than any form of computational propaganda.

“Conspiracy theories slowly erode the trust in the social cohesiveness.

“These in the long run can have an impact on society.”
