Police have launched a murder investigation following the fatal stabbing near Colchester Castle Park this morning. Emergency services were called at about 8.20am and remain at the scene. Police said that their investigation is currently at an “early stage” and urged anyone with information to come forward.
The victim has not yet been named.
An Essex Police spokeswoman said: “We are investigating the death of a man in Colchester.
“We were called by the ambulance service shortly after 8.20am today, Monday 11 February, with reports a man had been found deceased in Ryegate Road.
“He had suffered stab wound to his back.
“Enquiries remain at an early stage and we are appealing to anyone who was in the area this morning and saw what happened, or has any information, to call the North Major Crime team on 101 quoting incident 208 of today’s date.

Local residents said that when they first saw the man they thought he was sleeping.
One said: “I saw this man on the floor when I went out and I thought he was sleeping.
“I was taking my grandchildren to school, I can’t believe it, thankfully there was no blood I could see.”
Another added: “I think someone saw this bloke sleeping and went over to check he was alright.
“When they tried to wake him up, they realised what had happened.”
Ryegate Road runs next to Colchester Castle Park, which regularly hosts music concerts and festivals.
