Billionaire and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates denounced the crazy conspiracies about him and the coronavirus vaccine. While speaking to Reuters, he noted suggested a combination of a pandemic and social media has allowed for these conspiracies to flourish. Mr Gates admitted to being surprised how regularly his name and Dr Anthony Fauci’s name would be circulated in relation to coronavirus conspiracies.
He added he wanted the conspiracies to go away and insisted that, in the near future, people will need to get educated about how conspiracy theories and beliefs impact wider society.
Mr Gates said: “The presence of social media plus a pandemic is a combination that has never been tried before.
“Nobody would have predicted I and Dr Fauci would be so prominent in really evil theories.
“Theories like did we create the pandemic and are we trying to profit from it and they go on and on.
“I am very surprised by that, I hope it goes away.”
Mr Gates also reflected on what kind of people are easily swayed by coronavirus conspiracies.
He said: “The percentage that is really misled from conspiracy theories? It is unclear to me.
“There are millions of messages out there where my name and Dr Fauci’s name is used, but do people really believe that stuff?
“The fact that he joined the WHO and has appointed smart people is important.
The fact that Dr Fauci will not be suppressed and they will take full advantage of Francis Collins and Dr Fauci, who are wonderful people, is important.
“In terms of the pandemic, it felt like they were the only sane people in the US Government.
