In a modern mass entertainment age of far too many misfires and overblown flops, the Russos are currently on course to be regarded as the greatest proponents of the superhero, or any other blockbuster, genre. Infinity War cemented their ability to create a satisfying spectacle that also convinced on an artistic and intelligent level. However, Endgame could prove make or break. The brothers have to somehow bring back all the characters “killed off” in Avengers 3 without rendering that movie obsolete in the process. And now they admit they have one big regret?
Fans’ first logical assumption will be that the directors have killed off a truly beloved character. Unfortunately, that is almost inevitable.
The release of a new official Endgame synopsis warned: “With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers must assemble once more in order to undo Thanos’ actions and restore order to the universe once and for all, no matter what consequences may be in store.”
Oh yes, the cost will be high.
But this is not what the Russos were referring to in a new interview with CinemaBlend.
Anthony Russo told CinemaBlend the biggest regret about filming Infinity War and Endgame: “We wouldn’t shoot them back-to-back.
“I think the challenge for all of us was finding the balance between the two films. Because each film is so complex on its own that sometimes considering both of them was a bit overwhelming. So we looked for opportunities in the process to separate the two so that our brains could be fully focused on the narrative.”
This is understandable, since most non-superhero minds would boggle at trying to coordinate two of the biggest and most complex movies with probably the biggest principle cast of all time, at the same time.
Russo revealed the key to making it work and also gave a clue to what to expect in Avengers 4.
He added: “While the films have a connection, as the Marvel films do, they are distinct stories.”
Most theories concerning the final movie in Marvel Phases One to Three focus on how Endgame will directly link to and continue on from Infinity War. Somehow the Russos have conceived them as two separate storylines.
It leaves us no closer to figuring out how the Thanos they are going to sort everything out in April but raises our expectations even higher. Luckily, if anyone can meet them, it’s the Russos.
