In a recent interview, the showbiz legend was asked if she enjoys watching Marvel’s output, which will culminate with the release of Avengers: Endgame later this month. It’s a hugely lucrative genre enjoyed by millions, but it seems Midler is not one of its fans. She outlined three reasons why: the volume, the dialogue, and the reliance on “explosions”.
Asked by Variety if she enjoys Marvel movies, she said: “I don’t really, to tell you the truth.
“They’re unbearably loud. They make such a racket. They don’t really have any decent dialogue. And there’s a lot of explosions.
“Now I don’t know about you, but I don’t really like explosions. I’m not really an action fan.
“I think it’s something for young men. They like noise.”
That being said, she said she isn’t altogether against the idea of being in such a film herself.
“When they’re going to have a grandma superhero, I’m up for it,” she quipped.
“Wonder Grandma! That’s basically what they are making.”
It does seem as though the superhero genre has made a conscious effort to shift away from previous perceptions in recent years.
The release of Black Panther introduced the MCU to the Oscars for the first time, while Captain Marvel and – for DC – Wonder Woman have added female leads to the mix.
After Endgame, Marvel’s slate is said to include a Black Widow prequel movie, plus the fast-tracked Shang-Chi.
The Eternals – alleged to feature Marvel’s first openly LGBT principle character – is also thought to be in the works.
Avengers: Endgame is out on April 25 in the UK.
