The Grammy Awards will debut this weekend in the US, on Sunday, February 10 on CBS. The annual awards show – affectionately dubbed the ‘Grammys’ – hands out the biggest awards in the music industry for top performers, albums and tracks. As such, the event day itself is one where music greats rub shoulders, and some spectacular performances are arranged.
Ariana Grande was due to perform this year but has pulled out at the last second.
Why is Ariana Grande not performing at the Grammys?
Ariana Grande was originally in negotiations with organisers of the awards show to perform on February 10, but according to producers “felt it was too late” to pull something together.
Grammys chief Ken Ehrlich revealed he was engaged in promising talks with the star which collapsed at the last second.
Talking to the Associated Press, he said: “As it turned out when we finally got the point where we thought maybe it would work, she felt it was too late for her to pull something together for sure.
“And it’s too bad, she’s a great artist.”
Ariana Grande was angered by the music producer’s claims, and posted his comments to social media.
She refuted Mr Ehrlich’s claims in a series of tweets, saying the producer was “lying” about her.
The singer said the real reason she decided to back out of the show was because she felt “stifled” by the organiser.
She wrote: “I’ve kept my mouth shut but now you’re lying about me.”
“I can pull together a performance overnight and you know that, Ken.
“It was when my creativity and self-expression was stifled by you, that I decided not to attend.
“I hope the show is exactly what you want it to be and more.”
In a subsequent tweet, she added: “I offered 3 different songs.
“It’s about collaboration. It’s about feeling supported.”
Ariana said she was still grateful for the acknowledgement which came with being asked to perform, but she was “not playing games”.
She concluded: “It’s about art and honesty. Not politics. Not doing favours or playing games.
“It’s just a game Y’all.. and I’m sorry but that’s not what music is to me.
“Hope that helps everyone understand my decision. I am still grateful for the acknowledgement this year.”
