Anne Hegerty, 60, issued a defiant retort in defence of her fellow Chaser Jenny Ryan, 37, after The Vixen “riled up” a viewer. The Chase regular drew attention to the issue in view of her 46,000 Twitter followers as she shared a tweet from a viewer, which has subsequently been deleted. She captioned the post: “I’ve riled up some bots today, for some reason.” Following the quizzer’s admission, Anne stepped in to support her co-star while responding to a question from a fan.
The original tweet from Jenny’s follower read: “Wow, Jenny, how do you put up with this nastiness?”
Anne then took the opportunity to share her thoughts on the incident, as she replied in reference to Jenny’s critic: “Possibly because nobody feels very threatened by schoolgirls with no friends?”
The former I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! contestant’s comeback prompted Jenny’s fans to post their own messages of support in the comments section of her tweet.
One replied to Anne: “Even in your tweets I can hear your voice, these trolls/bots haven’t got two brain cells to rub together so they’re no threat.”
Another added: “It’s pathetic that someone has tweeted this to Jenny, people can be horrible sometimes.”
A third admirer wrote: “Brains and beauty are obviously a threat to trolls #thechase #winner #ignorenegativity.”
A fourth said: “Be interesting if you ever met her/him face to face. They are big deals behind a keyboard. For what it’s worth you do a great job on The Chase.”
A fifth tweeted: “No need to be so rude and hurtful… says more about them as people than the person it’s aimed at! X.”
Thankfully, Jenny seemed to take the negative comments from the “bot” in her stride, as she replied to another fan who referenced a particular insult about her glasses.
The general knowledge expert quipped in response: “Can’t fault that construction.”
Elsewhere, Anne was forced to take action again on the social media platform after a Twitter user informed the star about a scam involving her image which was being used to promote weight loss products.
The fan shared a screen grab of the fake article, featuring the caption: “Audience speechless after outburst on air. They had no choice but to put her on leave.”
The Twitter user then brought the issue to Anne’s attention, telling the ITV favourite: “Anne, these people are using you and a ridiculous story, via Facebook, to con people into viewing their weight loss product! It shouldn’t be allowed! I’ve reported this but not sure if it’ll do any good.”
Writing back, in view of her own 123,000 followers, the Chaser asked: “Could you send me a link to this? I can’t find it on Facebook.”
The fan replied: “Here is the link, I have reported them to Facebook too. Take care xxx.”
Anne went on to assure the fan she had taken action, saying: “Thank you very much for your help! I think it’s something I’ve seen before. I’ve forwarded it to my agent.”
The Chase airs weekdays at 5pm on ITV.
