Car tax changes: New scheme must find a ‘balance’ to avoid ‘crushing burden’ on drivers

Gerry Keaney, spokesperson for the BVRLA, issued the critical warning in the wake of Chancellor Rishi Sunak’s Spending Review.

He said: “The Government’s future motoring tax strategy has to strike a very fine balance.

“Yes, it needs to maintain vital revenues and encourage people into newer and cleaner vehicles.

“The Government must also avoid placing a crushing tax burden on businesses and individuals that are unable to upgrade their cars, vans or trucks and are already struggling to cope with the economic implications of the Covid-19 pandemic and EU-exit.”
