Birmingham horror: Armed police swoop in as ‘man stood on edge of balcony with machete’ | UK | News

Dozens of officers arrived at the flat, on Hill Street, at around 3pm and quickly surrounded the block of flats. Police were called to the flat, in Brierley Hill, 12 miles from Birmingham, after a man reportedly “stood on a balcony edge with a machete”. Special negotiators tried to bring the incident to a safe conclusion for several hours. 

Officers say the man was stood on the wrong side of the railings.

A police cordon remained in place until 7pm, blocking off Hill Street.

A spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Officers are currently outside a block of flats on Hill Street, Brierley Hill where a man is stood on the wrong side of the balcony railings armed with a machete.

“The road is cordoned off and police negotiators are at the scene to help bring the incident to a safe conclusion.”

Paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance Service and firefighters also attended the incident.

The man has since come down from the third-flood balcony, where he stood for several hours. 

A witness reported seeing the man smash the glass on the balcony.

Photos from the scene show glass from the balcony, where the man stood, was smashed.

It is not yet known whether the man has been detained.
