The Health Secretary said the new restrictions have been introduced in response to an increase rate of transmission in parts of Northern England. The new restrictions will affect Greater Manchester, parts of West Yorkshire and East Lancashire and will take effect immediately. Mr Hancock said the new spike in coronavirus infections was largely caused by people not abiding by social distancing rules.
The new measures ban separate households from meeting indoors and are not as strict as restrictions introduced in Leicester earlier this month, where shops, restaurants and hairdressers had to remain shut.
But the new local lockdown does cover a much larger area.
Leicester will also be bound by the new rules.
The northern areas included in the new lockdown rules include: Greater Manchester, Blackburn with Darwen, Burnley, Hyndburn, Pendle, Rossendale, Bradford, Calderdale and Kirklees.
