Leeds lockdown: Streets shut off and Army swoop in as city centre evacuated | UK | News

Police rushed to the scene and evacuated an area of Leeds city centre after the discovery of what appears to be a bomb pulled out of the River Aire this afternoon. Experts from the Army were called to the scene to assist officers.

It came after magnet fishers discovered the object near Granary Wharf centre early this afternoon.

A huge area has been cordoned off as explosive experts deal with the incident.

It is unclear if the device is still active.

Police said they were dealing with the incident and urged the public to avoid the area.

West Yorkshire Police wrote on Twitter: “Police are currently dealing with an incident in Leeds Leeds City Centre where a rusty metal object was found in the river in Canal Wharf.

“A cordon is in place and the local area has been evacuated.

“The public are advised to avoid the area at this time.”
