Grant Shapps slams ‘hostile’ Russia for not playing by the ‘international rule book’ | UK | News

The Transport Secretary outlined that the UK Government is looking at additional powers to deal with hostile states following the report into Russia‘s alledged meddling in the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. Mr Shapps told Sky News that a potential new law could surround foreign agent registration, similar to existing laws in the US and Australia.

Mr Shapps said: “We are looking at additional powers to look at the activities of hostile states.

“That may include introducing new laws which I think would be very relevant in this case, working with likeminded international partners on something like the foreign agent registration laws that exist in the US and Australia.

“This is not the end of the road as far as this is concerned.

“I do think it is important that we are very aware that states like Russia are not playing by the international rule book.

“I urge them to desist this kind of activity.

“Nothing in the report is news to our intelligent security service, they are working on this every day of the week and we will give them more powers if that is required.”
